History Night with John Gray

28th October 2019

WAVE would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to our first Local History Evening.  Tonight’s speaker was local historian John Gray who spoke on the theme ‘A History of North Belfast – An Earl, an Irish Chieftain and the Suffragettes.  A strange mix some might say!

John went about the task of having us explore these periods of history with great enthusiasm and a little humour.  His knowledge of the subject was second to non as the capacity crowd sat enthralled throughout the 45 minute presentation.  Little did we know that where WAVE in Belfast is located was such a rich tapestry of Irish history, and not just the meeting on Cavehill of the United Irishmen.

Other talks are planned for next year so keep an eye out for details.  Proposed talks so far include ‘Leading Irish Women – 17th Century to the Present Day’ (suggested date is Sunday 8th March ‘International Woman’s Day’), and ‘The Big Houses of North Belfast’, planned for the summer of 2020.  These will be posted on the WAVE Website and on social media channels.

WAVE would like to say thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the raffle and to those who dug deep to make sure the night was a financial success from a fundraising perspective.

A total of £400 was raised which will go towards the cost of a new Minibus.
