Patricia Murphy

Patricia’s mother, Kathleen Thompson, was shot dead by British soldiers in the back garden of the family home in Derry’s Creggan estate on 6 November 1971.

Her husband found her body when he went looking for her at a neighbour’s house. She left 6 young children. The British Army initially claimed that they had shot a gunman while returning fire. However, there was no evidence of other shots having been fired in the area. The family believes she may have been out banging her binlid which was practised in the community to alert people to the presence of army patrols.
