Betty’s husband, Louis Leonard who was 26, was murdered by loyalists/security force members on the 16th of December, 1972, while he worked late in his butcher’s shop in the village of Derrylin, Co Fermanagh. His body was found, face down in a walk in freezer in the shop. He had been shot several times. His family believes there was security force collusion in his murder. After his death Betty learned that the authorities were aware that his life was under threat but had not warned him. Louis was a civil rights activist and a member of the IRA. He and Betty had one child.
