Desi’s brother, Martin O’Hagan, who was 51, was murdered by the Loyalist Volunteer Force in Lurgan, Co Armagh, on the 28th of September, 2001, as he walked home from a local pub with his wife, Marie. The couple had 3 daughters. A Sunday World reporter, Martin had written extensively about crime, paramilitarism (loyalist and republican) and collusion. He had been living in the Irish Republic for a period because of fears for his safety, but he returned to Lurgan believing that by 2001 he was no longer at risk. His family believes security force collusion was a factor.
