Briege Voyle

Briege’s mother, Joan Connolly, who was 44, was murdered by British paratroopers on the Springfield Road in West Belfast on the 9th of August, 1971, during disturbances following the introduction of internment. Joan was searching for her daughters in the crowd and had gone to help a local man who had been shot by the soldiers when she was herself shot several times and left to bleed to death. She was the mother of 8 children.  Briege was 14 In 2021 an inquest found that all of the 10 civilians killed in what became known as the Ballymurphy Massacre were “entirely innocent” and that the original investigation into their deaths was inadequate.
