Shoes are important to each of us in our everyday lives. They protect and cushion our feet, giving support, comfort and warmth as we tread the paths of life. Shoes also conjure up words like sole (soul) and heel (heal), which can be related to our inner feelings but also our outward demeanour. In my shoes features a collection of stories from women who designed a shoe to share their experiences of conflict.

The first Injured book contained 15 stories from injured individual victims and survivors who had come together to form an Injured Group at the WAVE Centre in Belfast. Initially the group met together for social support, but in the aftermath of the Eames Bradley report, they embarked on a campaign for recognition for those injured in the ‘Troubles’. Injured on that Day was part of the campaign as they wanted to get their stories out.
Only one copy of this book remains and sadly is not available to own or borrow.
Perhaps one of the greatest nights in the history of WAVE was when around 300 people turned up at an event in the Belfast Centre to remember the bereaved and injured at Christmas. WAVE Belfast was transformed by over 3700 Christmas lights in the trees, one light for each person killed, and a tree of wind chimes to remind us that while they were not killed, the injured are still very much with us, often living in constant pain. This book tells the story of that remarkable night and pays homage to the people that made it happen.

Seventeen people were disappeared in Northern Irelands ‘Troubles’, but for most people they are simply a name on an occasional news bulletin. To their families they were lost loved ones, lives cruelly taken and secretly buried. This book lets the world see who the disappeared are. It tells of the disappearances and the families attempt to get the bodies back. Thankfully 14 of the bodies have been recovered and that story is also captured.

John Rush is a press photographer from Belfast. For many years he has been photographing victims and survivors of the ‘Troubles’. People Like Us is John’s attempt to bring present and past together. To remind us all that while Northern Ireland moves stutteringly out of the shadow of its violent past, that thousands of citizens continue to carry the trauma of their loss of family members. The book sets out to ensure that at least some of the dead and those left behind to mourn, are remembered and acknowledged.

The ‘Troubles’ and Other Losses tells the story of how death and/or injury as a result of the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland affected the lives of 16 individuals. It deals with ‘incidental’ death, that is to say, ‘death’ not as a direct consequence of a shooting or bombing, but lives that were lost or destroyed as a result of the trauma of losing someone.
