Stephen’s father, David, who was 30, was murdered by the IRA on the 3rd of December 1990, outside the mobile home he shared with his wife and baby son – Stephen was 4 weeks old. He was the couple’s only child. Stephen’s mother, Gladys, was slightly injured and a bullet grazed Stephen’s forehead as he lay in his cot. The IRA initially claimed that it had believed he was in the security forces – it later issued a statement apologising and claiming it had been given wrong information. Stephen’s mother, Gladys, gave an interview to Stories from Silence in 2018. She sadly passed away in March 2019.
